captain kangaroo and his pals

wow, captain kangaroo sure did have some supersonic sideburns...i forgot how large those things were!

anyways, this nostalgic book has amazing illustrations...i guess that captain kangaroo paired up with pals vitamins and this was the result. much better marketing than today's standards, i think. this once had a record, which is now sadly gone. here is an ad for it!

fairy tales and fables

i was unfamiliar with gyo fujikawa's work until i picked this up at a thrift store a few years ago...how could i ever have been in the dark?! simply amazing and downright adorable, as well. as you may know, anything fairy tale or fable is alright with me and this book is no exception. i think it's another must for your library.

this book includes the moon maiden along with other standard classics... it's really a wonderful resource.

miss z: the dark young lady

i got this lovely little book from etsy seller vintage books n' things...i am a long-time angela carter fan! i think angela carter wrote only two stories for the young adult; this one and another titled, the donkey king. i've never read the latter...maybe it's a re-telling of the grimms' tale the donkey? there is surprisingly little information that i could find online about both.
this book also has unique and wonderful illustrations by eros keith.

the folklore of weddings and marriage

when i first saw this book i thought it was from peter pauper press, then i realized it was a bit large and some more investigation brought me to its publisher: american heritage press (a subsidiary of mcgraw-hill). not only is the folklore aspect of it interesting to me, but the illustrations are by tomie de paola...maybe you've heard of his book strega nona?

these illustrations are super charming and have a very gorey-esque feel to them (particularly his illustrations for pbs' mystery!...(or shall i say gorey's work had a de paola-esque feel to them)).

i love that they are all printed in wedgwood blue (very wedding, no?).

the golden book of grimm's fairy tales

i love grimm's fairy tales...even though i still have a lasting fear of spinning wheels thanks to that little s.o.b. rumpelstiltskin. this is a really nice edition by golden press illustrated by gianni benvenuti.

good old holland and alpine wildflowers of rocky mountain national park

my mind is set on travel today, and these are two wonderful examples of tourist books (pamphlets really).

i love holland, my mother lives near maastricht. i have an aunt in amsterdam as well. i've been many times, although not for a long time. i always miss holland, and i am always looking for books about holland, preferably old travel books. that's how i found this gem. the letterpress cover is amazing!

the inside is really cute as well. it includes all sorts of short snippets of information about holland.

at the end there is a list of items exported from the netherlands...there are some interesting items listed, such as: electric household articles, medicines (incl. quinine), corduroy, pig iron, breeding cattle, phosphate fertilizers, and tin in blocks. a list definitely reminiscent of another time.

i located this in the travel section as well. i plan on using this as a possible resource for my illustrations. that and the cover is really cute. pretty snazzy for a nature association i think!
